Challenge

As the healthcare industry is constantly evolving, innovation is key to achieving better patient outcomes and efficient healthcare delivery. In this case study, we dive into a partnership between LOAD and Bayer, one of the major healthcare players, to develop a breakthrough product providing a training tool for physicians to better understand how to diagnose and manage chronic kidney disease.

Our approach

Our app uses open algorithms (e.g., CKD-EPI, KFRE 2 years, and KFRE 5 years) and leverages scientific medical calculations, such as glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and the six-variable Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation. This innovation represents a critical advance in assessing chronic kidney disease (CKD), evaluating kidney function and accurately adjusting medication dosages in renal dysfunction.

The product provides a set of inputs (age, gender, weight, creatinine and albuminuria), and after filling them in, we use the algorithms mentioned above to calculate the output and provide various charts and tables with the corresponding level.

Solution

The result of this partnership is an advanced web application (MVP) that healthcare professionals can use. The application is designed to run on various platforms and to integrate with electronic health records, making it more accessible to medical professionals. The innovation centers around open CKD diagnosis algorithms that ensure transparency and peer review. Medical professionals can use this to uphold scientific rigor and medical standards.

The partnership between Bayer and LOAD resulted in significant advancement in CKD assessment. Healthcare professionals are now equipped with a new training tool. This digital product plays a pivotal role in early intervention for chronic kidney disease patients.
